At the start of October 2017, Prince Charles said plastic is now on the menu. This leads to the question, ‘Why has plastic become such a problem in today’s world?’ The answer is obvious and it has to do with convenience; an expectation which appears to dictate many of our lifestyle choices and shopping habits.
The situation has become so bad that even educated people easily confuse the process of recycling with reusing, incorrectly assuming that recycling is actually a good by-product of human consumption. And that’s when waste is actually recycled, as a large percentage of waste collected for recycling is not even recycled and eventually ends in landfill or somewhere else in the environment!
Recycling does not address the issue of waste creation. It allows our bad habits to continue and businesses to carry on regardless of the impacts around us. We ought instead to give consideration to the problem at its source – why the waste packaging is being created in the first place and how we can change this phenomenon. This is precisely what Growler Swap seeks to address.
